Danay Garcia was born on July 5, 1984 in Havana, Cuba. Her father’s side of the family is Chinese- Italian and her mother’s family is of Spanish- Cuban descent. Her name is Greek and means “the Goddess of Abundance”.
Danay began taking gymnastics at the age of 5, which was soon followed by dance. She moved on to ballet, and became classically trained ballerina by the time she was in her teens. Dance became her way of expressing herself and her individuality and contributed to her on going work ethic. It also instilled a life- long reliance on discipline that she continues using to achieve her goals.
Eventually, Danay turned her attention to theater and it was there where she found her true passion, acting. She enjoyed being on stage and telling stories, along with the challenges of working with emotions and the complexities of human behavior. Her first role was the lead in “Maria Antonia” a play by Eugenio Hernandez Espinosa. She was the youngest actor in Havana’s theatre history to perform the role of a 40-year-old character while only 17. Danay received excellent reviews, most of which noted her innate ability to play the role with a depth of maturity never before seen from such a young performer.
Danay came to U.S. in 2003 to continue her acting career. While auditioning for roles, she supported her passion by modeling and was featured in print ads for brands including Mercedes-Benz and Macy’s, and appeared in countless U.S. and international fashion magazines. After several smaller roles, Danay landed a costarring role in the popular Fox series “Prison Break”, which ran for four season beginning in 2006. Danay played the lead role of Sofia Lugo during the series final two seasons and achieved instant fame as the strong, determined and level - headed female character, which brought to the show a definitive feminine balance point among the mostly male cast. She also appeared in episodes of “Supernatural”, “CSI: Miami”, “CSI: NY” as well as the principal guest role of Anna, in A&E’s “The Cleaner” series.
Opportunities in feature films soon followed. She costarred opposite Marisa Tomei in “Danika” (2006), a psychological thriller. Other credits included “Havana Rush” (2007), “From Mexico With Love” (2009), “Rehab” (2011), “Eternal Ashes” (2011), and “Liz en September” (2014) by acclaimed director Fina Torres. Danay recently completed filming the action-thriller film “Loca”, which she also produced, costarring Lou Diamond Phillips, Steven Bauer, Emilio Rivera and Danny Trejo which will be released in 2017. She also is filming an action-thriller set in Colombia which will also be released in 2017.
Danay currently costars in the hit television show “Fear the Walking Dead” on AMC. As the tough and beautiful Luciana, she protects the residents of the post- apocalyptic community La Colonia from zombies (“the infected”) and the living who will do anything or hurt anyone for food and other necessities.
